Hayden Panettiere, the former child star turned actress, has opened up about her challenging experiences in Hollywood, particularly during her time on the ABC musical drama series, Nashville. In a recent interview, she revealed the lack of support and empathy she faced on set, stating, 'It’s just shocking to me how little empathy people had. There were plenty of people who made the choice to not protect me.'
Her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, provides a detailed account of her struggles, including the intense scrutiny from tabloids and paparazzi, which she likened to being 'raw meat laid out for a bunch of hyenas to devour every single day.' Panettiere also shared a harrowing incident from her time on the press run for Heroes, where she was given a 'happy pill' by a team member, which she later realized were amphetamines. This incident highlights her trust in her team, as she stated, 'If they told me to jump, I jumped.'
The actress also recounted disturbing experiences, such as an Oscar winner exposing himself to her at an industry party and a close female friend inviting her onto a superyacht, only to leave her with a famous man who was undressed. She described this as a near-human trafficking experience, especially in the isolated setting of a boat in the middle of the ocean.
Panettiere's openness about these incidents is a significant step in her journey towards recovery. She has been working on overcoming postpartum depression and has achieved sobriety from alcoholism and substance abuse. She emphasizes the importance of having an outlet, stating, 'It’s when I don’t have the outlet of work, it’s then I go into the ‘an idle mind is the Devil’s playground.'
Looking ahead, Panettiere is eager to explore new creative avenues. She has recently appeared in the psychological thriller Sleepwalker and is set to star in action and comedy features. Her ambitions include directing and producing, as she expressed, 'There’s so much I want to do. I want to be creative. I want to get behind the camera. I want to direct. I want to produce.'
Panettiere's revelations offer a stark reminder of the challenges faced by young actors in Hollywood and the importance of support systems. Her willingness to share these personal experiences is a powerful act of resilience and a call for greater awareness and protection within the industry.
